Receiving negative responses towards the government
In the Covid-19 inquiry, the former Education Secretary, Sir Gavin Williamson, revealed that several mistakes were made regarding the school closure plan during the Covid pandemic, which has been attributed to damaging consequences for schools, students, and their families. Across several social media platforms, a theme of angry responses from the public has emerged, accompanied by a notable lack of surprise. This is because politicians and those in power constantly lie, and those who do not take accountability are common in society, not just in the United Kingdom, so no one was surprised by the revelations.

On YouTube, there was a consistent reaction of anger from the public about how the conservative government had lied, which was seen as “A great reminder of just how corrupt the Tories were for 14 years.” This reaction highlights how the public and other societies were already distrustful of politicians, and it justified their feelings.

The Guardian newspaper has written an article saying that children have been negatively affected and paid the price while trying to protect the rest of society in response to former prime minister Boris Johnson’s evidence for the inquiry, where he quoted that “he wishes ‘another solution’ could have been found over school closures”, even though he denies failing to plan effectively.

STV News created a post on Facebook about Boris Johnson’s statement during the inquiry, a week after the former education secretary’s evidence was given. The former prime minister denies failing to plan effectively, which sparked outrage online, with most people saying that “He was too busy partying” and that he should be in jail with other government officials for the lies. However, it would be hard since people in power are not usually held accountable.
In my opinion, the evidence that Sir Gavin Williamson gave as well as Boris Johnson’s statement during the inquiry about the decisions to close schools during the pandemic, which directly affects the UN sustainability goal about providing quality education, has justified the reasons why the public should not trust the government even though we have changed our government from the Conservative Party to the Labour Party after nearly two decades, enough time has not passed for us to see any real change with in the government. Hence, it is difficult to determine whether a Labour government will bring about positive change, and even if there are positive changes, it will take years to undo the damage and mistrust that the Conservative Party has caused.
A couple of tags I chose for this post are #EducationCrisis, as the education system has suffered a significant setback due to the government’s failure to plan effectively for school closures in the early stages of the pandemic. Another tag I chose is #PublicTrust since the conservative party has once again broken the trust of the public, and it took years for the truth to come out.
